Description
Trail begins below Death Canyon near Phelps Lake (at the Southern end of Grand Teton Natl. Park). One passes through stands of aspen that spread and then border the lake; presenting a brilliant gold on cobalt contrast in Fall. One continues on a steep climb up into Death Canyon next to a series of cascades from the Canyon's Stream. There is an abundant moose population in the Canyon and after getting onto the Teton Crest and Alaska Basin Trail one will experience environs reminiscent of Mongolian steppes to Pyrannese peaks with sunsets that paint the canyon and peaks in ways unique to the Tetons. There's abundant water and plenty of steep ascents and descents to use it up (p.s. bring the moleskin).

Directions to Hike
Either North of Jackson Hole on US 191, or South of Yellowstone on US 191/287 proceed to Moose Visitor Center in Grand Teton Natl. Park. The Center is park headquarters and where one must obtain a backcountry permit. Go from the headquarters to Moose-Wilson Rd and proceed Southwest till coming to the first right, take this road to the trailhead.
