Description
A fairly steep trail leads you on a short hike through Rhododendrums (in bloom in June) & fir trees to the top of Mt. Zion. The trail starts at 2,950 ft.

Approximately halfway up the mountain, you will see an obvious short (9ft) path to the right that leads you to a ledge. Take the few extra steps to get a magnificent valley view of the interior of the Olympics.

There are sweeping & far reaching views from the summit. You can see from Mt. Baker to Seattle, including the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There is a narrow ridge trail on the summit that will allow you to look east & west (for sunset) at various points.

I did camp here. There are three potential camping spots. This hike gets alot of day hikers, so expect company.

The next day was cloudy. The basin of the mountain, all the way to Seattle, was filled with clouds, which is always an interesting sight. With or without the clouds, you feel like you are sitting on top of the world (4,274 ft).

Directions to Hike
Directly from hiking book - from Quilcine, drive 2 miles north on US 101 to Lords lake Loop Road. Turn left (west) & follow the road 3.4 miles to Forest Service Road 28. Turn left and follow Forest Service Road 28, stay right at the three-way fork. The road becomes Forest Service Road 2810 at Bon Jon Pass, continue 2 miles on Forest Service Road 2810 to the trailhead. (It really helps to have a map with these roads clearly marked). Good luck.
