Description
The poster trail for the AT. In almost every book or pamphlet containing pictures of the scenic beatuty on the AT you are sure to come across a picture of McAfee's Knob. This just may be the most beautiful spot in Virgina. Its a perfect place to just get away for the afternoon or stay overnight at one of the two shelters along the way. McAfee's Knob stands 3400+ ft and is the tallest mountain in the area surrounding Catawba. Once you reach the summit you are awarded with a "ah" inspiring view of the Jefferson National Forest. If you rotate around to the other side of the mountain you can look down into the little town of Salem as well as catch a glimpse of Roanoke. This trail is a must for anyone who wants to be awarded with a great view after a 3+ mile hike. I highly regard this trail as one of the top 3 in Virginia.

Directions to Hike
From Roanoke: Take 81 South to the 311 exit. Follow 311 to the little town of Catawba. The AT signs should be present on the left side of the road and a designated park lot. If you hit the little town of Catawba you have gone too far. From the parking lot take the AT north and you're only 3.5 miles from solitude.
