Description
This is really just a correction to the post by Geoff Rhodes on 7/8/00. Per his directions the South trail is really about 11-12 miles long, not the advertised 2 miles each way. I actually met some people who had followed the same directions from this site thinking they would find a shorter trail to Tinker Cliffs. I made it about 4 miles before I saw a sign for Tinker Cliffs indicating it was 9.3 miles away. I did not finish the entire hike but there were some awesome views of the reservoir and of Roanoke. The terrain is not too difficult and a good workout.

Directions to Hike
Also, the South trail is not labled very clearly at all. I had to ask three different people where to find it. If you take I-81 North from Roanoke to the exit for 220 North(toward Daleville) and then cross under the interstate you will see a small parking lot on your left marked by a sign that says "park and ride". You should park here. The trail (which is not signed at all) is about 200 yards up the Hwy 220 past the gas station and just past the cleaners on the left. It's marked by the AT white paint on a small green sign. If you look to your right across the road you can see a white marker on a tree beyond a different gas station where the AT continues North.
