From the parking area, you will climb the trail one mile up at a fairly steep grade. There are several switchbacks to make the climb easier, and over the years many people have made "shortcuts" to the switchbacks. If you see one of the "shortcuts" please do NOT take it. Stay to the maintained portion of the trail. These "shortcuts" are causing erosion and make the trail very difficult to maintain. Once you reach the ridge at the top of the trail, you can go to two different lookouts. The east and west lookouts both offer different views and are very nice. During the winter months, the views are incredible. If you hike both of the trails for the lookouts, you will hike roughly 3 miles along the ridgetop. The trails on the ridgetop aren't strenous and are very relaxing. You'll want to make sure you come back down before dark, the trail going down the mountain can be difficult even in daylight hours. There are many portions of the trail that are narrow and easy to slide off if you don't mind your footing. I recommend taking a hiking pole or walking stick to help maintain balance. House Mountain is the highest point in Knox County, and a real treat to hike.
