Maddron Bald/Snake Den Ridge/Gabes Mtn Loop
This has been described as the best hike in the Smokies. I would only argue with that description a little because there's really no hiking above treeline on this trail. It is predominantly a hike through some really big trees and lush forest. You're not going to get any spectacular views on this trail except at a couple of overlooks found on side trails. You can start this hike behind the Jellystone Park between Cosby campground and Gatlinburgh like we did but I would not recommend this route. Instead, start at Cosby campground and hike the Gabes Mtn trail first. This will avoid the entry trail coming in from behind Jellystone which is really a boring hike. And you can camp at the two backcountry campsites on the trail which are truly incredible. Water is everywhere on this trail. Every corner you turn will reveal another creek or stream and more waterfalls to gawk at. Make sure to take your camera and tripod. The photography is excellent. Finally, this trail involves a LOT of uphill walking. Be prepared and be in shape. If you start at Jellystone you will be walking uphill for the first day and a half! If you start at Cosby your hike will be a lot easier.
