Description
Hickory Run state park is located in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania near Leheigh Gorge; it offers 43 miles of hiking trails. After checking in at the park office, we found the trailhead for the Hawk Falls trail, an easy .7 mile ramble with one stream crossing. The second trail hiked was the 1.5 mile Shades of Death trail which was a moderate jaunt through twists and turns along tumbling water. Snow started falling as the third trail, Shades of Death Ridge trail (1.5 miles) followed with switchbacks along a ridge. The day ended with a 3.5 mile Boulder Field Trail hike. This natural area is said to have a Phantom River 2-4 inch deep underneath it flowing to the lake. There are bears in this area, so stay alert.

Directions to Hike
From I-80 in PA, take Exit 274 at the Hickory Run state park exit. Drive east on Rt 534 for 6 miles.
