Description
This is not a difficult trail as the book and all other information tout. It is a very pleasnt hike with plenty of clean gushing water with superb views(Clouds permitting). It is worth the 17 mile hike.
From the parking lot you will see the trail. Cross the parkign lot and get on to the trail. At the T junction marked North and South take the North direction. You are going towards Canada on the PCT now. PCT coming from Mexico. Just be on Pacific Crest Trail. Just look out for the small metalic plates on the trees marking the PCT. Then you will pass the Gillet lake and then you come to the Camping grounds of Gillet lake. Here it is slightly confusing as the campers have made many mini trails. But as usual remember you are to be on PCT only. Use common sennse. After some more time you will come a 4 way junction. The trail to the right seems to be going uphill and the elft one downhill. I dont know where they go. We kept going on PCT which is straight. Shortly after this junction you will come to a major 4 way junction. The trail coming from the left we were told is the Mazama trail coming up from the road from near Hotsprings. Anyway just continue on PCT. Then in a very short distance you will see the big metalic painted board saying this trail to Table Mountain is closed due to erosion. Ignore it and continue further. Then you will see another big metalic board saying Tbale Mountain trail. Till here the climb is very easy. From here is the 1 mile straight up. This is the only challanging part. This is the place you can easily get lost. It is all rocks and skree and people have gone in all directions creating 101 trails. We also got lost. The thumb rule is keep going up. Be very very careful as it is quite steep and slippery. At some point you will hit the proper trail, guranteed. You will know you are the top when you find youself on a flat mountain and no more climb. That is the west side. A small trial leads you inside the forest to the east edge. This is the loop which has been closed. The day we went it was raining and very foggy and cloudy. So we did not get any views at all. But we knew we were at the top of the world and sky was our limit. On our way down we just followed the trail on the ridge and we made it down without any incident. 6:30AM we left the parking lot and were back at 1:30PM. We met Don and Diane Davies on the trail and they helped us a lot in finding our way out of the quagmire. Or else you would have heard about us as 2 lost hikers in the news!!(-: Enjoy Table Mountain.
