Description
I wanted to go about nine or so miles and I had recently seen the normal Zaleski dayhike so I modified one. My plan was to go from A-F on the side trail and then do the north loop which I had not seen. I encountered two problems. One was that the blaze for an abrupt left along the trail was on a tree that fell blocking any normal trail sign that was underneath it. I finally decided to use my compass and I thought I have to be right on top of the trail based on my previous travel and the topo. Well I was directly below me down a near vertical face was the trail. I lost some time here but oh well who's counting the minutes anyway. Then, about 3 miles later, I happened upon a turn in the trail. There was a little used trail going off into some brush and a four lane highway of a trail to my right. I make the right and to my assurance there is an orange blaze the same color I had been following. After an unknown distance the trail dead ended at a T intersection. The tree directly in front of me had an orange arrow pointing right and one below it pointing left. Now i pull out the map. I admit I am an idiot. This trail is so easy to follow I rarely even looked at the map even on previous visits but I had not done this section before. Well the map showed a T intersection at point G and a short 0.2 miles to a road crossing. I hiked left for what seemed like a mile and no road or signs of one nearby. No blazes since the double arrow either. Poop! I walked back to the double arrowed b*&tard and went the other direction still on a four lane highway of a trail mind you. Finally I decided that I wasnt staying on anything resembling my planned route and would be facing darkness if I didnt "create" an alternate. Looking at the topo on the map and my surroundings I found two possible places where I could be. Both required a northwesterly correction to get to sr 278 so off into the holler I went. This was nothing like the four lane I had left full of briars and fallen saplings minor climbs and a lot of them. In the end I wound up at point G and a well groomed trail. I assume the trail I was on was a logging road but whoever blazed it in orange needs to walk that crevice (I bailed into) in July to fully understand why Krylon comes in different colors. Had one paid attention to the map one would see that at point 11 that little trail into the brush was the correct choice and would have had a better time. Overall Zaleski is a good place for backpacking in southeast Ohio.

Directions to Hike
us 33 east to nelsonville. Right (west) on 278 follow the signs to Lake Hope 15 miles or so. Maps available at the trailhead. If they are out the rangers office is further down on the right and they have some accessible out front 24 hours daily. if you finish early enough get the maps and goto 2 short hikes back to old railroad tunnels. Moonville and King the tracks arent active but they are interesting tunnels. Hikes are in two different locations but both hikes combined total less than 1/2 mile.
