Description
Evangola is situated on a high bluff providing panoramic views of Lake Erie. Hiking trails crisscross almost 1000 acres of the park's habitat providing access to the forest, wetland and open meadow environments. A good starting point would be area 3A, where at the trail head kiosk; a backpacker can pick up a trail map showing the main trail loops. April brings a chourus of mating Spring Peeper and Wood Frogs to vernal pools along the trail. April is also a time when thickets of trailside shrubs attract the American Woodcock to feed and mate. At dawn and dusk the male Woodcock performs a spectacular mating flight diving, spinning, and chirping. From mid-April to late May see the thousands of migratory songbirds which refuel on insects before continuing the migration over Lake Erie. Summer is time for recreation at Evangola where you can select a campsite and swim at a life guarded beach. At Evangola work up your hunger with 18 holes of disc golf and then eat at the lakeside 50s Diner. The last Fri. Sat. & Sun. in August brings the Annual Tomato Festival with bands, markets, rides, games and family activities. The fall hiker will enjoy the fall foliage colors which last longer at Evangola because of the moderating effect the warm waters of Lake Erie provide. Winter snows allow snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the trails south of the parkway. Along the trail Turkey, Whittail deer and Ruffed Grouse are often seen. Hiking & camping supplies are available at the canpground store from mid April to late October.
