Description
This hike begins at the abandoned mining village of Adirondack, which is now refered to as the Upper Works. This village was used for mining iron and then later titanium until the 1960's. The Calamity Trail for the most part follows Calamity Brook from the trailhead to the Flowed Lands. This is a rather challenging hike, especially with a backpack, but it's well worth the 2 1/2 to 3 hour hike in. The trail is rough in some spots, and it's very wet in the spring. There are several lean-tos and camping areas at the Flowed Lands and the view is beautiful. Algonquin Mt, Wright Peak, and Mt Colden make for great day hikes from this area. Beware of the bears - they will take your food if you're not properly prepared! Be sure to invest in a bear-proof container, since hanging food is not an effective deterent to the bears.

Directions to Hike
The Upper Works trailhead is at the end a road that leads north from Route 28 north near Newcomb NY.
