Description
Kinsman range on the east side of Franconia Notch. Start from Lafayette campground, follow forested trail to Lonesome Lake and take the Hi- Cannon trail. It can be rough and steep, but great views from several ledges overlooking Lonesome Lake and across Franconia Notch(assuming there's no fog - this is the White Mountains! Be careful not to fall off into the Abyss.) Continue climbing up switchbacks and a ladder and along several cliff ledges to the Kinsman ridge trail junction of and a mystical walk through stunted trees to the Cannon Mt. summit (4,100 ft, 3 miles from start). Unfortunately there's an aerial tramway and snack bar for ski season (but you can shorten the return by taking the tram!). Take the steep and rocky Kinsman trail down, 2 miles with views west into Franconia Notch. Check out Profile Lake and the Old Man of the Mountain rock formation at the bottom. Easy, flat walk back, another 2 miles through the woods along the Pemi trail, parallel to the Franconia Parkway. I saw a young moose snacking in the bog here! Facilities, lodge and showers at the campground.
