Description
this short trail loops up over high shoal falls at South Mountain State park. Overall I would say the hike was moderate, It starts out nice and level climbing slowly and meandering next to a Jacobs Fork River then goes to stairs leading up to a platform overlook at the base of the water fall. It is well worth the hike to see the water fall. You can continue on up the stairs to the top of the falls. There is a nice area for wadeing at the top and a picnic in the shade along side the river. Then the trail continues along the ridge a bit before comeing to the first of several backpack campsites. The river runs behind one of the camp sites with a large rock that you can lay on beside the water it is a great way to lay out and enjoy nature at it's best. Then the trail makes its decent down the other side of the mountain back to the level area where you began. Me and my three kids did this trail as our first back pack campout ever. We had the time of our lives. I had to help my youngest daughter abit to get up a few of the stairs because her legs were not long enough but what can you expect at age four. Over all it was a great experience and would recomend it to anyone who wants to try to experience nature first hand. Be sure to bring a water filter. The camp area has pit toilets and camp fire rings but the only water is the river. It's a good mile up and down to the parking area where you first begin to get fresh water otherwise. There are several other really good trails at this park and they offer horse trails too.
