Description
This alpine trail starts near the top of Eastern America's highest peak, Mt. Mitchell, and cascades up and down four other peaks over 6,500' before ending at the Deep Gap campsite. Mt. Craig offers beautiful views of the Black Mountains, and there are also a few more opporunities to take in the beauty of the Blacks along the way. Be sure to bring plenty of water - there are no substancial sources along the way without wandering off the trail. Also expect to encounter icy patches along the trail during the winter months.

Directions to Hike
From Asheville, follow the Blue Ridge Parkway north for about 25-30 miles until you get to Mt. Mitchell State Park. Turn left at the state park sign, and follow NC 128 to the picnic area on the left near the top of the mountain. Overnight hikers need to be sure that they register at the trail head or at the ranger's office.
