Description
From the Devil's Creek trailhead this trail climbs gradually (about 2000 fett elevation gain but nothing agonizingly steep)for about five miles to a pass. Most of this uphill is through thick forest though there are a few spots with fine views of an impressive rock wall on the other side of the valley. After a switchback to the top there are glorious views in all directions - north into Glacier Park and south and east into the Great Bear Wilderness. A two-minute descent from the pass brings you to a junction. Turn right for a very steep climb to another pass that leads to Tranquil Basin, go straight for an easy 1.5 mile gradual descent to beautiful Elk Lake (full of fish for hiker-anglers), or a steep descent for about 3.5 miles to Moose Lake. Camping locations close to Moose are small and the only site suitable for a large party is at least half a mile from the lake (and, therefore, an easy water supply). Just below Moose Lake the trail connects to the Twentyfive Mile Creek Trail that you can follow all the way to the Middle Fork of the Flathead, about 6 miles through another heavy forest. About a mile below the three-way junction at the pass the trail meets the Vinegar Mountain Trail, for those with peak-bagging ambitions. In short - study a trail map and this can be part of an extended loop or point-to-point hike, all the while passing through gorgeous valleys, viewing splendid mountain scenery, and enjoying the grand solitude. There were fresh huckleberries regularly along the trail from the pass all the way to the Flathead - dessert for hikers and grizzlies.

Directions to Hike
The Devil's Creek trailhead is just off US 2 about five miles north of where the Middle Fork joins that highway, maybe 15 miles from the Walton Ranger Station. The trailhead has ample parking and a platform for loading stock.
