Description
First you should know that there is an admission fee for entering Tishimingo State Park, but it is well worth it. This park features geology that one would expect to find in the Appalachians or the Ozarks, but not Mississippi. There are a lot of sandstone boulders and bluffs complete with waterfalls. The best trail in the park starts at Bear Creek. This creek is a good place to do some canoeing. A buddy of mine has rented a canoe at the park where they shuttle you a few miles north to put in. You take out at the park. The trailhead starts at the suspended bridge that passes over Bear Creek. It then goes up to a bluff with formations that look like blocks some giant mason placed there. It runs along this bluffline and eventually passes a small waterfall. It then comes to a small stream and turns back downhill past some unusual rock formations where the stone has eroded. It comes back to Bear Creek and follows it back to the bridge and the trailhead. There are some pretty little rapids along the way as well as a small spring that bubbles up out of the ground. While you are in the area check out the other trails. The park once boasted a total of 8 miles of trail. They are still there, of course, but not well kept. You can hike them but they may not be well marked and there may be a deadfall or two. One is located near the park entrance and I have seen people hiking there. The other is a short loop trail that starts out at an old cabin. It passes a dam and lake and goes by some large rock formations with overhangs. You can’t miss it as it is about halfway through the park on the way to Bear Creek. If you pass some modern cabins you have gone too far.

Directions to Hike
Take the Natchez Trace north out of Tupelo for about 45 minutes until you see a sign for the park. Follow the signs to the park entrance.
