Description
The awsome beauty of the scarlet reds of the sugar maples, and the golds and bright yellows of the Hemlock and birch trees made us gasp in wonderment. My wife and I had had embarked on a canoe/backpacking trip to the wilderness of the Michigan upper penninsula. This was my wifes FIRST time experiencing the deafing silence and peacefulness of "the great outdoors". We put-in at Clark Lake and at once became one with nature as we dipped our paddles in the unspoiled transparent water. The colors of the foilage were more intense than we could have dreamed possible as we traveled the length of the lake. The portage into Loon Lake was only 99 Rods but with the amount of gear we had packed became quite an undertaking. The brilliant yellows and golds of the surrounding stand of old growth birches and maples took our minds off of the weight of our packs. Loon Lake was stunningly beautiful in it's serenity and the haunting crys of the loons. A violent thunderstorm awakened us the following morning to settle-in and enjoy some quiet time with my life's partner. That night we experienced a sky filled with uncountable stars mirrored on a lake of glass, a memory we shall never forget. The wonderful solitude and breathtaking scenery have now captured my wifes' heart, and a seed of passion for the true wilderness has been planted.
