Description
This is a 4 or 5 day backpack on level ground in the area of Baxter Park referred to as the northern wilderness. Reservations are required.

Spot a car at the Wadleigh Brook trailhead and begin hiking from Trout Brook campground. Hike 6 miles to the Little East lean-to or tent site, hiking through beautiful woods and along Grand Lake Matagamon. Look for grouse along the way, and check out the sawdust beach. If the water is low, look for brachiopods (fossils). Spend the night on the banks of Webster Stream and the East Branch of the Penobscot listening to coyotes howl. Hike 5 miles to Webster Stream lean-to or 9 miles to the Boathouse lean-to or tent site on Webster Lake. Don't miss the Grand Pitch and take a dip in Webster Stream. At Webster Lake look for moose and deer, and don't miss the sunset! From the Boathouse lean-to or the Webster Stream lean-to, hike a couple of miles to the Wadleigh Brook Trail and then hike 6 miles to the Hudson Pond lean-to. There is a spring along the way. Look for moose in the pond, territorial deer, and lots of turtles in the water. Hike 8 miles on the Wadleigh Brook Trail through bogs and forest to your vehicle. This can be a loop trip by adding a night at South Branch Pond and hiking through the Fowler Ponds area to Trout Brook campground, adding another 7 miles or so to the trip.

This area of the park allows hunting and some of it is part of the scientific forest management area. This means that fishermen are flown in and after October 1st hunters are flown in. At Webster Lake and Hudson Pond you can hear logging trucks. Despite these invasions the trip is still well worth it, and you may not see another person the entire time.
