Description
Illinois Canyon (Starved Rock)

There is a great trail behind Illinois Canyon! Above there are stairs carved into the sandstone that cross over a 10ft. deep collection pool fed by a brook with multiple small water falls that steps it down. The water sheets off into a canyon with another large plunge pool that forms another waterfall that flows through ravine finally ending in a small waterfall flowing into a very large deep body of water with plenty of stones for skipping.

Unfortunately, this trail has been closed off to hikers because it is the only place the bluffs over look bodies of water that is deep enough to jump. Due to the danger in this many people have gotten seriously injured forcing a reaction. Because of Chapter 20 ILCS 835 Section 6(7) and Administrative Code: Title 17, Chapter 1, Subchapter a, Part 110, Section 110.120 they can restrict areas and these restricted areas are completely illegal to hike.

The first offense for this crime is a Class B misdemeanor which brings with is at least $75 fine all the way up to $1200. Conservation Police (Co Po) will show no mercy when it comes to \"Entry to a restricted area.\" They will search you and ticket you without question.

The trail also goes back towards the parking lots from here. It is all in fact a defunct trail that is still marked with brown and white tags. The brown signifies it is a bluff trail and the white signifies a return path to the lodge. If you do not see the restricted signs, which can be easy to miss, you\'ll find yourself hiking on a trail that only the Co Po seem to think you shouldn\'t be on.

I am currently researching more behind the history of the trail and more behind why it was closed. Don\'t go on the trail if you ever go to Illinois Canyon at Starved Rock.
