Description
A difficult and long hike through volcanic landscape, old lava flows, grassy coastal slopes of the Kilauea shield volcanoe (active), and to a small and isolated lagoon at Halape Point, where coconuts are wild and free. Must pack 5 liters of water and have purification tablets. Round trip hike takes 2 to 3 days.

Directions to Hike
On the Big Island of Hawaii, fly to Hilo, then drive to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park headquarters along the Volcanoe Crater Road. After about 10 mil, the landscape changes to lava flows. A sign and park information mark the trail head. Hike through lava flows, down the steep coastal trails marked with lava-rock cairns, then through grassy slopes, arriving at a lagoon with black sand. From there, a marked trail information points West. Take that 5 mil trail to Halape bay and lagoon.
