Description
The Pine Mountain Trail is, IMO, the perfect trail for someone's first backpacking trip. The trail offers just enough elevation change to count, but not too much to wear you out. There are a series of loops for shorter mileage, and the thru-trail is 23 miles. Starting on the East end, at WSJP TV, the trail starts off through a nice forest for a couple miles, heading for Cascade Falls and the Wolfden, a nice vertical rock formation beside the falls. There are 2 or 3 other smaller, but nice, waterfalls before you get to Cascade Falls. Continuing west, the trail goes up and down minor elevation gains and losses until crossing Highway 190 at trail mile 18. After crossing the road, the trail travels downhill past Rocky Point, a great overlook of the ravine below, for 2 1/2 miles to Brown Dog Campsite. This is my personal favorite because it is off the trail a good ways and there is room for at least 10 tents. Past Brown Dog, the trail turns up hill for about 1.6 miles to Dowdell's Knob, a favorite spot of Franklin D. Roosevelt's when he frequented here. It is said that FDR had the seats of his favorite care removed and he used those as "lawn" chairs. The overlook at Dowdell's Knob is worth the trip. The area below looks more like north Georgia than central Georgia. The trail past Dowdell's Knob winds up and down, around Sunset Rock and Mollyhugger Hill until coming to Highway 190 again. You are almost to mile 11. Cross Hwy. 190 and the trail gently descends down to Big Poplar Creek. The section you are now on is part of Big Poplar Loop. Just past mile 9 is Rattlesnake Bluff, a nice overlook. The trail continues on for 2 more miles until crossing Hwy. 190 a third time. From here is it 3 miles to the FDR State Park Office. This is all of the trail that I have hiked. I didn't do that last 4 miles for various reasons. I'd recommend this trail to anyone. The Pine Mountain Trail Association maintains the trail expertly and the scenery is beautiful. Good hiking!
