Description
We did this hike in January. It had been warm in Atlanta the previous few days but when we got to area, there was snow on the ground and a wicked wind. The hike itself was very nice, with the first half (going counter-clockwise) never getting too strenuous.

With plunging temperatures and 20mph winds, camping became more of a survival exercise than a recreational experience. Never underestimate the potential for severe winter conditions in the Southern mountains.

The second half was a little more strenuous and was particularly difficult during the final descent back to the park due to the icy trail. Nonetheless, I would recommend this trail to anyone in fair condition looking for a nice overnight backpack trip without the need for retracing your steps. You'll need a backcounty permit at the ranger station.
