Description
Jack's River trail is a wonderful hike in north Georgia. I took 7 boy scouts on a two day hike along the trail last weekend, August 26 & 27, 2006. We found it to be an enjoyable experience that was just right for the mix of boys. One of the boys crossed over this spring and had been to summer camp, so this was his introduction to backpacking. We distributed most of his gear amongst us so his pack would not be too heavy.

Because it was this late in August, we were lucky enough to have low water levels that made fording the river relativel easy. I have been on the trail when we would have had a substantially more difficult time with the boys. We camped approximately 5 miles into the trail. After setting up camp, most of the boys and I hiked up to the falls. This proved to be as much an adventure as our first five miles. We encountered little problems with the numerous fords. They swam inseveral pools and found a few snakes. Luckily, the boys remembered who the visitors were and left the snakes alone.

We saw at least five major groups along the way, some camped, others on their way to camp. We saw little trash on the trail, but we did see how high the water had risen due to perhaps last years hurricanes that passed through Georgia after hitting the coast.

Thank yo to either the national forst service ora club that might maintain the trail. We had a great time and I would recommend the trail for users.

Directions to Hike
From Atlanta, take I-75 North to I-575 North. I-575 will turn into US 76. At the US 75/GA 5 intersection north of Blue Ridge, travel north on GA 5 toward McCaysville for about 3.8 miles. Turn left onto Old GA 2. Stay on Old GA 2 for about 10.5 miles. Old GA 2 is paved for the first nine miles or so. Take a hard right onto FS 22 and drive about 3.7 miles to the trail head at Dally Gap. We were able to clear this last 3.7 miles in a Honda Accord with some scrapes on the gravel road. There are some steep dropoffs and no guardrails.

Also from Atlanta you can take I-75 north to US Hwy 411, then north through Chattsworth. About 10 miles north of Chattsworth, turn right where Ga hwy 2 goes west to Ringgold. This is old Ga hwy 2 that goes to the bottom of Jacks River, once you get into the national forest, follow the signs.
