Description
Beginner to moderate hike. Incredible views all along the hike. The Aspen groves are absolutely inspiring. This hike looks like something straight out of a travel brochure. The first part of the hike is a moderate uphill climb which levels out into a few open meadows. There is a stream feeding out of the lake which crosses the trail several times as the trail switches back and forth. The view from the lake is well worth the hike. There is a break in the trees right at the bank of the lake which allows for a nice place to rest and relax. The lake was well populated with several kinds of water fowl.

I did the hike in about 40 minutes with 2 labradors which easily made it to the lake before I did! This is an excellent choice for hikers that want something out of the way and not heavily traveled, but easily accessible.

Directions to Hike
Drive south on Highway 84 from Pagosa Springs approximately eight miles to Blanco Basin Road (#657). After driving 10 miles, turn right across the Blanco River Bridge. Follow the Castle Creek Road (#660) to the signed junction for the Opal Lake Trailhead. Turn right here and drive a short distance to the trailhead on the right. The trail to Opal Lake is 1.2 miles and takes about 45 minutes to hike.
