Description
Much moore strenuous then Yosemite Falls. This hike takes you up Bubbs Creek to a trail toward The Sphynx. You will need a map to navagate once you branch off the main trail to The Sphynx Drainage Area. You start out at 5000 @ roads end,(Get your wilderness pass there), and reach the first lake at 9800, in about 7.5 to 8 miles. One stretch of the short steap switch backs is an engineering marvel--- (Stairway To Heaven). You gain the most vert. in this section. Unreal views of Kings Canyon.
Drink plenty of water while doing this hike and take frequent breaks to avoid altitude sickness. Once to Lower Sphynx lake, set up camp. Lake is full of Brook and Rainbow Trout. Then in the morning, travel right of the lake to the next lake, 1.5-2 miles. The views of this section of the high country is breath taking. camp there and take day hikes.
For those who want to take it easy going up, there is a small level camp site for about 3-4 tents about 3/4th the way to the lower lake at the left side of the trail. You can see it on your contour map. It's small but worked for us and 2 others. There is a brook about 50 yards away. Have a water purifier. Suggested to take min. 3 nights to do this. Only because of the vertical gain and the unsurpassed beauty. Enjoy, but, not for the faint of heart. You will pay your dues on this hike, but it's worth it.Mosquitos in early summer, take OFF Repellant.
