Description
The first 5 miles is all riparian, following the Piru Creek. This area was once thought to be gold laden. Try panning for gold in the Piru? After a gentle climb in largely shade, you arrive at the first Fish Bowls Camp. It is absolutely beautiful. It is creekside and cool in the heat of the day. Looks like an area that the Chumash Indians might have used. Upstream a bit is another camp, and upstream even further are the “Fish Bowls”. These are natural tubs carved into the streambed. I would want to have a rope tied off to something above the bowls for stability before venturing up into the tubs. They look wonderfully refreshing. Fill up on water before continuing on. The next portion of the hike is dry, uphill and arduous during the heat of the day. Over the top of the hill, then down through lots of switchbacks until you reach Cedar Creek. Aptly named, the towering Cedars smell and look awesome. If you had a second car at the Cedar Creek Trailhead then you are home free, otherwise walk down Grade Valley Road to return to your car at the meadowy turn off.

Directions to Hike
The hike is in the North-Eastern part of Ventura County. Lockwood Valley Road runs between highway 33 (Out of Ojai) and Interstate 5. (Frazier Park Area) Take the Lockwood Valley Road to Grade Valley-7N03 (Go South). This turn off will also read Thorn Meadows, Pine Springs and Halfmoon. After Pine Springs Camp, but before Thorn Meadows/Cedar Creek, there is a turn out. This meadowy area is to the West side of the road. There is a cattle ramp and a trail marker at the trailhead. Park out of the way. This is where the hike begins. If you have a second car you can park it on the road down at the Cedar Creek turn off.
