"Old-style yes but room for lots of hikers, 14 I think. Drawback is the volume of horses on the Russell Field Trail. Decent water supply."

"This is an old-style shelter with chain-link across a dark interior. We've found snakes and bats inside this shelter in the past. The shelter is located at a busy intersection on the AT. Many people (some on horseback) come up the Russell Field trail from Cades Cove for a day hike loop. The last time I passed by Russell Field Shelter, I talked to a group of 7 hikers from Chattanooga who were doing a 19 mile loop up to Gregory Bald and back down to Cades Cove. "
