"Newfound Gap to IceWater is an easy start to what is always a 30-40 miles journey in GSMNP, unless you are a dayhiker. I have always liked this shelter. It faces the right direction, is not so far in that you can't turn back if conditions are just ridiculous, and you don't have the technical gear.

From IceWater, you can carry on your journey in several directions. My favorite is on to Pecks Corner.

    ;)

Supposedly the only downside of this shelter is the fact that it is over-used to the extent that even if you WANTED to overnight there, most likely the GSMNP service won't grant an overnight. Whatever. It's always been a pass-thru point for me, so it's a moot issue.

Hope you enjoy your time in the Great Smoky Mountains!"

"The A.T. has now gotten into to my blood and brain. There was a postcard sunrise here at icewater on the 25th of July 2005. The water source is good but only a trickle out of the pipe, but peaceful is the wait and "Where else you gotta be?""
