Description
The Village Creek State Park trail system is made up of several trails. Two of these, Austell and Dunn can be combined to make a 5 or 6 mile loop. I started my hike at the visitor center and hiked through the ridges and hollows to Lake Austell. From the lake the trail takes you through a forest with a floor covered with ferns. At one point there is a small spur trail with an overlook of Village Creek. You then come to a deeply eroded road that passes through a thicket and over the creek by way of a suspended bridge. Then you are on the Lake Dunn trail that follows a ridge to lake Dunn passing what looks like the sites of old farms. Once you make it to Lake Dunn, you backtrack a bit to a side trail that goes down the hill to the camping area. You can then follow the road back to the Visitor Center. There are other trails in the Park. The Big Ben Trail is a small loop trail that goes down into a hollow to the creek and then back up to the trailhead. There is also an offshoot of the Austell and Dunn Trails. The Military Road Loop Trail can be accessed at points along the Austell trail south of the lake. There is also a spur of the Old Military Road that can be found coming off of the Dunn Trail. It is a linear trail. The entire park is on Crowley’s Ridge, a thin penensula of hilly terrain that passes through the Arkansas Delta. I don’t think camping is allowed except for the developed camp sites, but the trails are pretty much day hike material. Feel free to E-mail me for pictures.

Directions to Hike
Take Highway 284 north from Forest City, AR for about 10 miles to the park. The entrance will be on the right. Once you are at the park stop at the visitor center for a map.
